New Orleans Saints

Sadly Dez Bryant Injury Report was Predictable

The news that Dez Bryant apparently blew out his Achilles tendon should have sent shivers around the league, but it shouldn’t be a surprise.

If you study the first couple days of OTAs, minicamp and training camp, players tear ACLs and Achilles tendon. That’s been history and it can be anticipated.

Bad WR Deal Led Dez Bryant to New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints placed wide receiver Cameron Meredith on the injured reserve list today after finding out he’s going to need arthroscopic surgery.

That explains the signing of Dez Bryant, who will be paid $600,000 for the remainder of the season. Meredith, who suffered an ACL injury last season when he was with the Chicago Bears, signed a two-year, $9.5 million deal with the Saints as a restricted free agent. The Bears didn’t match and went out and signed wide receivers Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel.

Game of Week – Saints-Rams Should be Fantasy Bonanza

Los Angeles Rams at New Orleans

Spread: Rams -1.5

When Los Angeles Has The Ball:

This projects to be an excellent football game between two of the very top teams in the league and is quite possibly an NFC Championship game preview. It also projects to be a game that we should see a lot of points scored. And for fantasy reasons, you want pretty much any player in this game that you can get. Of course, the Rams are one of the best offenses in football with a fantastic blend of great personnel with a supreme offensive scheme. The one question here though is Jared Goff at a point of his career where he is ready to outduel Drew Brees in New Orleans in a high scoring game? We shall see and it will be a blast to watch. Sean McVay runs an offense with excellent run/pass balance. Los Angeles is almost at a 50/50 run/pass split. But in this game, going pass-heavy makes the most sense, even in the very loud dome. The reasoning for this is that the Saints have been great against the run and vulnerable, but improving, against the pass. Goff is a very good deep passer and surely will take shots in this game downfield, most likely to Brandin Cooks. The Saints have been vulnerable to the deep ball. Will Brandin Cooks mostly see Marshon Lattimore?

Game of Week – Drew Brees All Day

 New Orleans at Minnesota

Spread: Pick Em

When New Orleans Has The Ball:

The Vikings defense hasn’t played up to their very high expectations and their usual standards this year and is currently dealing with a lot of injuries on this side of the ball. Linval Joseph, Everson Griffin, Anthony Barr, Xavier Rhodes and Andrew Sendejo could miss this contest and Mike Hughes is on injured reserve. The Saints have the best set of offensive tackles in the league and one of the top offensive lines without question, but they are dealing with injuries on the interior. This unit did an exceptional job of keep Drew Brees very clean against an excellent Ravens pass-rush in Baltimore last week. They used a lot of no huddle in that road contest and could do the same in Minnesota.

Drew Brees — The Failed Physical That Changed Franchises

Congratulations to Drew Brees, the NFL’s new all-time passing yards leader. This is a story about how medical matters and how hard work makes a difference. In this case a failed physical changed the course of the two franchises, helped resurrect a hurricane-ravaged region and changed the landscape of college football.

I feel like an ESPN 30 for 30 on the topic is coming one day. In the meantime, here is my biased take on what took place. I was the head team physician for the Chargers during Brees’ five-year tenure in San Diego. I was there when he was drafted and there to put his shoulder back in place on the field after it dislocated on his last play with our team.
