Hue Jackson

Coaching Hot Seat is Real and Needs to Slow Down

We can feel coaching hot seats simmer every Monday.

Tampa Bay coach Dirk Koetter took over the play-calling and ended up producing only three points in a 16-3 loss to the Washington Redskins. Today, Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis fired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin after three bad defensive performances and he plans to take over the defensive play-calling.

Last week, the Detroit Lions fired special teams coach Joe Marciano. Earlier this year, offensive coordinators Mike McCoy (Arizona) and Todd Haley (Cleveland), defensive coordinator Mike Smith (Tampa Bay) and offensive line coach Paul Alexander (Dallas Cowboys) were first. Hue Jackson of the Cleveland Browns was the first head coach fired.

Since the start of free agency in the early 1990s, an average of seven coaches get fired every year. It’s the impatience of owners, and I think seven is much too many. When you keep firing that many coaches, it gets more difficult to find replacements.

This is How Browns Should Build Around Baker Mayfield

After going 3-36-1 with zero wins on the road, Hue Jackson has been fired by the Browns. It is a little shocking that an organization that is so quick with their firing trigger finger would have actually waited this long on a coach that boasted a .205 winning percentage.

Making matters worse, since taking over before the 2016 season, Jackson’s Browns have the worst points-per-game in the NFL. And Jackson is an offensive minded head coach. The way Jackson handled DeShone Kizer last year was coaching malpractice. Not only did he jerk the rookie quarterback in and out of the lineup, showing little faith in him or conviction as a coach, but Jackson’s scheme with a lot of slow developing isolation routes gave Kizer little chance at success, especially with the Browns’ receivers.

The Browns absolutely should look at one of these bright young offensive coaches with the innovative ideas and college principles that are making young quarterbacks successful. Imagine Baker Mayfield in Kansas City right now or with the Rams.

Hue Jackson Firing Headlines Mid-Season Black Monday

This wasn’t necessarily the Black Monday the NFL experiences at the conclusion of the regular season, but it was a dark day for quarterbacks and coaches.

Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley were fired in Cleveland. The Dallas Cowboys fired offensive line coach Paul Alexander. Jameis Winston was benched and replaced by Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The theme is obviously offense. Browns ownership tired of the inconsistencies on offense and were probably concerned how it was affecting rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield. Even back to the Hard Knocks days, friction between Jackson and Haley was visible in their first season together in Cleveland.
