Amari Cooper

NFC East is a Mess – Who Will Emerge

he NFC East went from exhibiting big aggression in the front office to dropping a big goose egg on the field.

Yes, this division is up for grabs. May the least messy team win.

Last week, the NFL East was the most aggressive division at the trade deadline. The Dallas Cowboys acquired wide receiver Amari Cooper. The Philadelphia Eagles grabbed wide receiver Golden Tate. The Washington Redskins traded for safety Ha Ha Clinton Dix.

This week, the NFC East’s feast has turned into a famine. The Cowboys were dominated in Monday night’s, 28-14, loss to the Tennessee Titans. Cooper did well but he didn’t spark the Cowboys stagnate offense. At 3-5, the Cowboys are in crisis mode.

MNF Preview – Amari Cooper can have Big Cowboys’ Debut

Tennessee at Dallas

Spread: Cowboys -5

When Tennessee Has The Ball:

This offense has been extremely disappointing this year. It has been awfully tough to watch at times. It might be time to stop making excuses for Marcus Mariota, but he has played through an injury to his throwing arm. That can’t be ignored. Coming off a bye might be exactly what Mariota needs.

Ranking NFL Trades Thus far

There have been four NFL trades in the in the past six days. Expect more before Tuesday afternoon’s deadline.

Until then, let’s lock the past four trades and what to expect in terms of value and production. So, we are going to rank the four trades in in terms of what I expect from the players. Here we go:

  1. Amari Cooper: He better be at the top, right? The Dallas Cowboys surrendered a first-round pick next spring for Cooper, So, he must produce. I’ve covered the Oakland Raiders extensively since Cooper was the No. 4 overall pick in 2015. I’ve never been a huge fan of Cooper. Yes, he has put up some big numbers. but take a gander at his game logs. He is painfully inconsistent. Plus, he drops a lot of passes and his toughness has been questioned. Still, he is just 24 and has shown ability. I think the Cowboys will get something out of him and he will make the offense better. But I think the Raiders did well flipping Cooper, although that’s certainly not what they wanted to do when they drafted him.
  2. Damon Harrison: Snacks can be tasty in the land of the coney dog. The Detroit Lions acquired the big run-stuffer from the New York Giants this week for a fifth-round pick. He is a former All-Pro. The Lions have the 30th ranked run defense this year and they are hanging around the playoff race. Harrison will make the Lions’ defense better and give them an identity. Snacks is gonna eat.
  3. Carlos Hyde: The Jaguars acquired the former Ohio State star running back from Cleveland last week for a fifth-round pick. He is set to make his Jacksonville debut this week in London. Hyde is going to be the Jaguars’ lead back with Leonard Fournette out for an extensive time. The Jaguars will give Hyde a big opportunity. He is an average back, but he can help keep the Jaguars’ hopes alive in the AFC South while Fournette is out. For the cost, Hyde should do fairly well for the Jaguars.
  4. Eli Apple: I don’t think Apple is a total dud, but I don’t see him as a high-level addition for New Orleans. The Saints gave the Giants a fourth-round pick in 2019 and a seventh rounder in 2020 for the former first-round pick. Apple was playing better this year, but he’s had rocky time with the Giants. The Saints believe they are a Super Bowl contender and hope this addition will solidify that. I think the Saints certainly can make the Super Bowl, but I have a difficult time believing Apple will be the reason why.

Major Trade Trends Developing in 2018

Several trends are emerging as the trade deadline approaches Tuesday.

I love that the NFL moved the deadline back a couple of weeks. Having the deadline after the eighth week instead of the sixth gives more teams the chance to see if they are contenders or pretenders. With the deceased practice time under the 2011 collective bargaining agreement, it takes coaches longer to determine the direction of their teams.

As it turns out, trades have escalated. The Snack Harrison trade from the Giants to Detroit this morning is the 94th trade this year, topping last year’s total of 93. Last year, there were seven trades in the final days of the trade deadline. That number should hold up this year.

Let’s study the trends:

Dallas Cowboys Will Give Amari Cooper a Chance to be Star

As I mentioned in a recent article, the Cowboys were a logical team to pursue Amari Cooper. Now it is has become reality, as Dallas sent a first round pick to the Raiders to add young receiver.

For Oakland, it is pretty clear. Jon Gruden has the ultimate job security and has all the power in the organization. He will rebuild the Raiders in his image. By moving Cooper, Gruden now has three first-round picks next year and five over the next two drafts as well as additional salary cap room to do exactly that.

NFL Monday – Amari Cooper trade makes sense for Raiders

The Oakland Raiders’ trade of Amari Cooper was no surprise.

While the Khalil Mack trade caught the NFL world off guard, all the Oakland Raiders wanted to hear is from a team willing to give up a No. 1 pick. The Dallas Cowboys complied, topping a reported offer of a No. 2 pick by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cowboys, Eagles, Packers make sense for Amari Cooper if Raiders Trade Him

Going into Week 6, rumors were swirling that Amari Cooper could be on the trading block. With the Raiders season spiraling downhill, it is becoming more and more apparent that the new man in charge, Jon Gruden, wants “his guys” rather than those he inherited. Oakland, now 1-5, has already traded Khalil Mack and could be open to other deals, with Cooper being the most notable. After another miserable performance, the Raiders look poised to compete for the first overall pick in the draft.

Cooper has been frustrating and highly inconsistent over the 2018 and 2017 seasons. Drops have been a problem for sure. He looks somewhat disinterested while lacking discipline and physicality, but Cooper is a very talented all-around wide receiver. The thing though is that Cooper’s tape is more impressive than his lackluster numbers. Getting out of his current situation could do this 24-year-old a lot of good, but acquiring Cooper does come with some risk without question.
