Miami Dolphins Have More To Regret About Drew Brees Than Chargers

We proclaim this as Drew Brees day. Hell, it’s better than national boyfriend day or seahorse day or whatever those kooks cook up.

We’ve been honoring the great cool Brees this week in the form of a Matt Williamson piece and a great, personal story by our Dr. David Chao.

Brees is on all of our minds, of course, because he became the NFL’s all-time leading yardage leader Monday night in a spectacular win over Washington. Brees is definitely worth feting. And it’s not all because of his video-game  statistics, his longevity or his success despite being a relative NFL pipsqueak.

His story is not the norm.

How the Eagles’ Offense Will Look Without Jay Ajayi

The Eagles barely edged out Atlanta on opening night and then have gone on to lose three of their last four with the lone win in that stretch a narrow victory over the now 1-4 Colts. They started the season without their outstanding franchise quarterback and top wide receiver. Their offensive line hasn’t played to the high standard it set in 2017 and the back end of Philadelphia’s defense has been far too generous while the pass-rush has taken a step back.

The Eagles have committed far too many self-inflicted wounds and they have not been very good on special teams. Philadelphia has not yet been able to put a full game together and have already faced the easiest portion of their schedule. Now, word just came out that Jay Ajayi tore his ACL and will be out for the remainder of the season. It isn’t easy to repeat as Super Bowl Champions in today’s NFL.

What does the loss of Ajayi mean to this offense? Even though he only carried the ball eight times on Sunday while likely playing injured, Ajayi currently leads the Eagles in rushing attempts by a wide margin, but only leads Wendell Smallwood in rushing by 34 yards. Ajayi averaged 4.1 yards per carry and contributed little as a receiver before his season ended.

Drew Brees — The Failed Physical That Changed Franchises

Congratulations to Drew Brees, the NFL’s new all-time passing yards leader. This is a story about how medical matters and how hard work makes a difference. In this case a failed physical changed the course of the two franchises, helped resurrect a hurricane-ravaged region and changed the landscape of college football.

I feel like an ESPN 30 for 30 on the topic is coming one day. In the meantime, here is my biased take on what took place. I was the head team physician for the Chargers during Brees’ five-year tenure in San Diego. I was there when he was drafted and there to put his shoulder back in place on the field after it dislocated on his last play with our team.
